In 2020, Pembroke Corgi's were ranked the 10th most popular dog breed and have been classified as one of the most agreeable "small" house dogs. While many think of them as a small dog, they are actually a dwarf species. They are highly intelligent, energetic, playful, agile and world class herding dogs. Imagine the intelligence and skill required to dart into a herd of cattle, nip at their heels to re-direct them while simultaneously avoiding being trampled in the process.
This explains perfectly our experience of having a family of six successfully herded to one end of a deck by the 14 week old corgi WE were trying to catch. His name was Cadfel and he joined our family in 2007. He was the constant companion of our youngest son and is the reason we chose to breed corgi's. We quickly fell in love with the breed and ultimately transitioned from breeding Schipperke's (A Belgian Barge dog) to breeding corgis. Research and due diligence regarding genetics and lineage, ultimately brought us our first Dam and Sire and we welcomed our first litter in 2015. Since that time, we have welcomed two more dam's to our breeding program and continue to breed for excellence genetically in addition to temperament.
First, they have amazing personalities and are fiercely loyal to their family members and they love to work. Legend has it they are enchanted and served as mounts for fairy warriors. If you look closely, you can see the marks of the "fairy saddle" over the shoulders of their coat. As they grow, they have multiple ways of expending all that energy. The official term is "frapping" and corgi's are known for it. They tire themselves out by running in circles, dashing from room to room and becoming almost manically playful. In our home, we call it "THE ZOOMIES" and it is the very best evening entertainment.
From the time they are born to the day they leave our home, they are nurtured, cherished and taught. Many breeders allow puppies to transition to their forever home at 6 weeks of age, however we are firm believers that the time between 6 and 8 weeks of age is critical for socialization and an increasing awareness of their placement within the pack order. Within the home, the pack order pertains to all members of the adopting household (this includes any children who live in the home or children who frequently visit the home). Assuring the foundation for the continued rearing of a loving, well socialized and loyal pet is our primary vision at Corgi's In A Blanket.
